The team at Warm Paws - Supply Donations for Rural Pounds NSW has created a vaccination program to not only save lives but also get dogs and puppies out of the pound sooner!
Why is the Warm Paws Vaccination Program so Important?
Parvovirus is a serious threat to our furry friends, especially in regional areas where vaccination rates are low. In Australia, there are about 20,000 cases per year of parvovirus in dogs and puppies.
The virus attacks the intestinal lining, resulting in severe gastroenteritis, hemorrhagic diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. In a pound environment, with no possibility of treatment, most of these precious souls won't make it, either dying from the painful disease or being euthanised.
Vaccination is the ONLY way out of this crisis.
Vaccinating these dogs and puppies in the pounds is a safeguard for their health and the rescuers coming to get them knowing they aren't spreading the disease. We donated $5,000 to Warm Paws earlier this year and they were able to vaccinate 79 dogs and puppies across regional pounds like Dubbo, Parkes, Griffith and Cootamundra.
This program has had so many positive effects, especially with private pet transportation businesses who were reluctant to take jobs picking up from rural pounds due to disease risk. Due to the success of their vaccination program, we have donated another $10,000 so that Warm Paws can expand the program to help more dogs. This funding is estimated to help another 154 dogs and puppies.
Going into these rural outback pounds and getting these dogs and puppies vaccinated against the deadly Parvovirus gives them a fighting chance of staying healthy while waiting for rescue. It also helps our rescue partners not take on the financial burden of a parvo case, and prevents the spread of the disease into their rescue and community.
